All previous breaks came to nothing until Nick Walker and Steve Charles got away on the final lap. Working together they got a gap of about 15 secs at the bottom of the finish hill. Nick outsprinted Steve with Mark 'PNuT' Arnold leading the bunch home just behind.

Paul Martin road the Edgware Road Club event at Hillingdon but in his own words 'did nothing inspiring and came in 17th I think'.
Paul Martin rode the ERRL Maldon race on Sunday. Unusually for this course there was no wind which meant that it was hard for anyone
to get away. There were a few small groups (including one Paul was in) but they never got more than a couple of hundred metres.
On the last lap Ron Hewes tried to get away around the back of the course and someone went with him but by this time the bunch was moving
quite quickly. In the last few kilometres everyone was trying to get to the front down the ride of the bunch and there were many incidents
of riders being on the wrong side of the road as cars approached with the commissaires horn sounding very frequently.
As the race turned off for the finish the 2 leaders were reeled in and the charge for the uphill finishing line began. Paul was
reasonably well placed and felt good and managed to get 6th closely followed by just about everyone else.
Paul Martin and Justin Browne rode the Essex Roads event on April Fools day with Paul ending up in was 14th spot. They were both feeling tired after a week's training in Majorca and at the start Paul just about staying with the bunch and couldn't go with any breaks. By half way there were 12 away. The bunch started to work together and make some ground and by the last lap the 12 were just 50 seconds in front. Paul was starting to feel better and got away on the last lap but no-one went with him and was pulled back after a couple of miles. On the final climb he attacked on the hill and 4 came went with him. He sprinted on the 2nd half of the climb and he was 2nd of that group over the line. The break ended up just a handful of seconds ahead.
ResultThe overnight rain cleared to leave dry roads but the cold and extremely windy conditions played havoc with the race nonetheless. Paul Martin and Andy Ballentyne both rode the first (ABC) race and included notable riders such as Andy Meilak, John French and Mick Gray. Paul got into an early break the first time up the hill in Debden but dropped back to the bunch a short while later. This break continued to make progress and started to gain. Another break (including Mick Gray) left the bunch, with Andy just failing to get across to them in the headwind. This break joined up with the leaders to form a group of 11. The bunch meanwhile plugged away but steadily lost ground despite some attempts to get across, the most serious on the 4th lap and included both Andy and Paul. On the last lap however on the headwind leg to Radwinter, a truce was called with the riders saving themselves for the bunch sprint in which Paul was 4th (15th overall) and Andy 6th (17th overall). The winner was Andy Cullinane.
Jim, Paul and Justin rode at Hillingdon with Jim stepping up to the 4th Cat race. He made 2 attempts to get away but both times getting
100 metres off the front before the bunch dragged him back. Eventually he finished in the bunch.
Justin and Paul rode the E123 race (Justin got enough points in the earlier races to be a 3rd cat). The race was fairly frantic at the
start as you would expect with a number of very strong Elite riders (Tony Gibb, Alex Dowsett). Justin and Paul held on and after a
while a lead group got away and things settled down. In the end the leading group stayed away and Dowsett won, followed by a bunch
sprint from which Paul managed 20th overall (which was 9th place out of the 2nds and 3rds ) and Justin 47th which he was pleased with.
(.. I was led out on the penultimate lap .. which catapulted me to well in front of Paul. Only mistake was not being able to hold it!!!)
Paul Martin was 19th in the Hillingdon winter series in the strong winds.
